Susan Sarandon Brushes Off Animal Rights Volunteer Amid Controversy

NEW YORK CITY, NY — Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon appeared to disregard an animal rights volunteer during a recent outing in Manhattan. The incident happened on April 11, 2025, as Sarandon navigated the busy streets while the volunteer was fundraising for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
The 78-year-old actress, known for her dynamic roles and advocacy, was seen briskly walking past the volunteer without engagement. Instead, Sarandon made a few animated gestures before moving on, leaving the volunteer visibly puzzled.
During her outing, Sarandon sported an eye-catching ensemble featuring a black embroidered leather jacket, a red cardigan, and purple sneakers. The sighting arrives amid the actress’s ongoing fallout with Hollywood, reportedly stemming from her outspoken political views.
In November 2023, Sarandon sparked controversy during a pro-Palestine rally, where she made statements about Jewish people ‘getting a taste of what it feels like to be Muslim’ amid the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict. Following her remarks, she claimed to have been effectively blacklisted by her agency, United Talent Agency (UTA), which represented her for over a decade.
Sarandon subsequently accused UTA of sensationalizing their decision to drop her. “I was dropped by my agency, my projects were pulled,” Sarandon explained. “I’ve been used as an example of what not to do if you want to continue to work.”
Despite the backlash, Sarandon expressed gratitude for those who support her activism, stating, “I’m grateful for my new empathic, brave friends and family.” She emphasized a commitment to fighting against violence and injustice, declaring, “No one is free until all of us are free.”
In later interviews, Sarandon reflected on how the controversy led to the loss of professional relationships and work opportunities. She also noted that, amid the fallout, there are numerous individuals affected in the industry who have lost jobs over similar controversies.
Meanwhile, Sarandon has continued to be vocal in her support for a ceasefire in Gaza and has attended several rallies highlighting humanitarian issues. In an apology issued in early 2024, she acknowledged that her phrasing during the rally was a mistake but reiterated her desire to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
As of now, Sarandon’s future in mainstream filmmaking remains uncertain. When asked if she would be offered a significant role again, she simply said, “I don’t know. Not anything in Hollywood.”
