NEW YORK, NY — Author Suzanne Collins has launched her highly anticipated fifth installment in The Hunger Games series, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping”. Released on March 18, 2025, the book is a prequel that explores the harrowing events of the 50th Hunger Games, featuring a young Haymitch Abernathy, who would later mentor Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

The narrative unfolds in a time of unrest, paralleling contemporary societal issues, and examines themes of propaganda and censorship that are prevalent in Collins’ previous works. This addition comes following the success of 2020’s “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” adding depth to the universe of Panem.

Central to the story is Haymitch, portrayed as a troubled teen celebrating his 16th birthday coinciding with the reaping. Unlike previous years where only two tributes are selected from each District, this year’s games will see four children chosen, amplifying the tension as they face grim prospects of survival. Gifted a bottle of liquor and a symbolic flint striker from a close relationship, Haymitch’s formative experiences in the arena shape his character and future connections.

The novel intricately weaves relationships between Haymitch and familiar characters from both the original series and the prequel. David Levithan, Collins’ longtime editor, remarked on Haymitch’s unique journey, stating, “In their own ways, Katniss and Snow gain power, while Haymitch starts from a good place and loses everything. Now we see the cause of his struggles.”

While the book delivers engaging moments and emotional depth, it has garnered mixed reviews about its originality and reliance on established themes from the franchise. Critics note that the abundance of familiar characters and events might detract from the new storyline. Although some find the connections to previous narratives unnecessary, others praise the exploration of rebellion and the impact of authority in Panem.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” draws attention to the extent of censorship and control exercised by the Capitol. The stark portrayal of violence in the games acts as a reflection on modern societal dynamics, prompting readers to assess the integrity of historical narratives. The book poses poignant questions about the nature of truth and the power of memory in shaping history.

The excitement surrounding “Sunrise on the Reaping” is not solely rooted in its literary merit. A film adaptation, already announced, is set for theatrical release in November 2026, continuing the franchise’s legacy which has earned over $3.3 billion globally.

As audiences reconnect with the world of Panem, the book invites a fresh perspective on the past struggles that defined its characters, ensuring that they remain relevant in today’s context.
