Sydney Sweeney Gains Weight for Role as Boxer Christy Martin
NEW YORK, NY — Sydney Sweeney is embracing a new challenge as she prepares to portray trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic titled “Christy.” The actress, known for her role in “Euphoria,” gained 35 pounds and transformed her grandmother’s shed into a training gym to get into character.
Sweeney trained intensely, dedicating hours each day to boxing and weight training. “Every single day I would weight train in the morning and night, then I’d box for like two or three hours a day,” Sweeney shared during an interview. She also described how she built her training environment, stating, “I put flooring in and boxing bags, and I brought my trainers up there.”
The transformation was physically demanding, leading to minor injuries during shoots. “We were actually fighting,” Sweeney said. “I got a concussion. We were knocking each other out. We were getting bloody noses.”
She connected deeply with Christy Martin’s story, explaining that Martin was a pioneer for women in boxing during a time when the sport was male-dominated. “She ends up marrying her trainer who unfortunately manipulates her, and she becomes a victim of domestic violence,” Sweeney revealed, adding, “I want to be a part of telling that and, hopefully, opening doors for other people.”
To her excitement, Martin watched Sweeney film her fighting scenes. “It was so fun having her there,” Sweeney recalled. “I could hear her at the bottom of the ring going, ‘Hit her with a left hook!’”
As Sweeney promotes the film, she also teased aspects of the next season of “Euphoria,” hinting at some themes of exploring faith, stating, “Some people are going to find God, some are going to need God.”
