TORONTO, Canada — Sydney Sweeney is carving her path in Hollywood, balancing fame and identity as she promotes her upcoming boxing biopic “Christy” and navigates rumors about becoming the next Bond girl. The 28-year-old actress sat down for an interview on Tuesday ahead of her film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she reflected on her roles and the industry’s perception of her.

“For Christy, the ring was her escape,” Sweeney said, discussing her portrayal of boxer Christy Martin, who faced both triumph and torment during her career. “It’s almost like you’re a caged animal inside this ring, but it’s a place where she feels most free.” As they prepare for their film’s screening, she feels a connection between Martin’s struggle and her own journey within Hollywood.

Sweeney has faced intense scrutiny throughout her career, particularly surrounding her public image as a sex symbol. “People think they know me, but they don’t,” she explained. “When they say ‘she’s leaning into that,’ I feel it’s more about me feeling good and confident for myself.” Her latest projects have required significant physical transformation; she packed on 30 pounds of muscle to embody Martin.

The conversation took a turn when asked about the rumors that she might take on the famed role of James Bond. “I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise and I’m excited to see what they do with it,” Sweeney admitted. “Honestly, I think I’d have more fun as James Bond,” she added with a laugh, emphasizing that it all depends on the script.

In addition to “Christy,” Sweeney is also set to star in the psychological thriller “The Housemaid,” slated for release on Dec. 19. Both films are produced under her banner, Fifty-Fifty, showcasing her growing influence in the industry. Despite her rising star status, Sweeney aims to defy the labels often associated with her. “You shouldn’t have to apologize or hide in any room,” she said, hoping to inspire confidence in other women.

As the festival progresses, Sweeney’s challenging and multifaceted performances continue to thrive amidst the backdrop of the entertainment industry’s ongoing scrutiny of her choices—both on-screen and off.
