Tajikistan Launches First National Internet Exchange Point

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan — Tajikistan has officially launched its first National Internet Exchange Point (IXP), named TJ-IX, aimed at improving the country’s digital infrastructure. The IXP, based at the state-owned company Tojiktelekom, was inaugurated today with support from the Communications Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
This project represents a significant milestone for the nation as it seeks to enhance internet services. An official from the communications service commented, “The goal of launching the IXP is to improve the speed and quality of internet services, reduce data transmission delays, decrease dependence on international routes, and support Tajikistan’s digital independence.”
TJ-IX allows for direct internet traffic exchange between Internet service providers (ISPs) and other organizations, thereby aiming to reduce latency, increase access speeds, and lower costs associated with international internet traffic.
The IXP offers various advantages for its participants, including direct traffic exchange, improved connection quality, and support for both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. The network boasts a bandwidth capacity of up to 500 Gbps and guarantees an uptime of 99.99%. Additionally, it features extensive monitoring and security measures.
<p“ISPs, government agencies, private companies, educational institutions, data centers, and content delivery networks are eligible to connect to the IXP,” the official added. Future plans for the project include expanding regional access points across the country, integrating with international platforms, and connecting university networks.
This initiative marks progress toward a reliable and independent internet infrastructure in Tajikistan, reinforcing the country’s digital sovereignty. Since 2016, Tajik authorities had already centralized internet traffic through Tojiktelekom, enhancing government oversight for surveillance purposes aimed at controlling communications.
