Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel Promote Healthy Co-Parenting for Their Son

LOS ANGELES, California – Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel continue to demonstrate a commitment to positive co-parenting following their separation in 2013. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Diggs shared their co-parenting dynamics, highlighting their mutual desire to prioritize their son, Walker.
The former couple met in 1995 while performing in the original Broadway cast of Rent and married in 2003. They welcomed Walker in 2009 but announced their split four years later. Despite this, both have focused on fostering a loving and stable environment for their now 15-year-old son.
“It’s fairly simple with us. We’ve always tried to put [our son] first,” Diggs said. “Because we do that, it doesn’t really leave room for us to speak negatively about each other.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship for Walker’s sake.
Menzel, 53, and Diggs, 54, both pride themselves on the cooperative approach they have taken. Diggs noted, “The more we all can get along, the better it is for him and the more love and positive energy he gets.”
As Walker navigates his high school years, Diggs noted that his son has taken a keen interest in athletics, particularly basketball, while balancing his academics. “It’s been really fun just watching him take athletics seriously and at the same time focusing on his academics. I give all that credit to his mother,” he stated, adding that Menzel ensures their son’s academic performance stays strong.
Diggs also mentioned his daily routine involves spending quality time with Walker, often centered around meals and shared activities. He was recently involved in promoting a new holiday classic titled I’ll Be Home for National Margarita Day, a film that aired on Lifetime.
The film tells the story of former lovers who reunite at a local restaurant amid challenges threatening their town’s tradition of celebrating National Margarita Day. “Me and my son brought a bunch of grub back to the crib – we tore it up,” Diggs laughed. “The fact that he loved all the food we got and didn’t interrupt our time together was huge for me.”
The holiday film premiered on Wednesday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET, showcasing both Diggs’ and his son’s connection over food and entertainment.
Although the couple separated years ago, they have shown growth by maintaining respect for each other’s roles as co-parents. Diggs emphasized, “We’re pretty proud about the way that we handled our relationship. Hopefully, it will continue.”
