Texas Running Back Jerrick Gibson Leaves Team, Preserves Redshirt

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Longhorns sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program following a challenging year, allowing him to preserve his redshirt. Gibson’s departure comes just days after he received one carry for minus-3 yards in a victory over Oklahoma on October 10, 2025.
This season, Gibson recorded 152 rushing yards and one touchdown on 37 carries, displaying flashes of potential during his freshman year with 377 yards and four touchdowns on 78 carries. However, competition has increased with the return of running backs CJ Baxter and Christian Clark, along with the emergence of James Simon.
Gibson, ranked as the No. 117 player nationally and the No. 9 running back in the 2024 recruiting class by 247Sports, struggled to find his footing in Austin, primarily due to issues with ball security. He fumbled three times last season, an issue that persisted into the current campaign.
Before leaving the program, he did not see action in games against Ohio State or Florida, concluding his Texas career with 37 carries for 152 yards and one touchdown in 2025. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian noted that while Gibson was viewed as the short-yardage back, the team’s needs shifted to backs better suited for pass protection and catching.
Gibson will enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens later this year, seeking a new opportunity to showcase his skills.
