Texas Tech Coach Calls for Jacob Rodriguez Heisman Talk
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire stirred up conversation about linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and the Heisman race during a press conference on Monday, October 27. Following the Red Raiders’ 42-0 shutout victory over Oklahoma State, McGuire called for Rodriguez’s recognition alongside top players in college football.
“This Heisman race is really unique,” McGuire said at the press conference. “Usually, there are a couple of guys who jump out as leaders, but I feel like we have two defensive guys who could easily be in the mix.”
McGuire took to social media as well, replying to a Texas Tech Football post, asking, “Can we start talking about JRod [Jacob Rodriguez] and the Heisman race?!?!?! #WreckEm.” Rodriguez hasn’t commonly been part of Heisman discussions, but his impressive performance might warrant attention.
Rodriguez leads all linebackers with at least 100 defensive snaps in several key metrics, including overall defensive grade and run defense grade. He has emerged as a playmaker, recording either an interception or a forced fumble in five separate games this season.
“The impact he has on games is huge,” McGuire said. “He’s taking the ball away and scoring touchdowns.” Rodriguez’s ability to create turnovers was showcased when he stripped the ball from running back Sesi Vailahi during the game against Oklahoma State, returning it for a touchdown.
“He’s just a great leader for our football team,” said defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, emphasizing Rodriguez’s work ethic and preparation. “He leads by example and is very consistent.”
Despite the traditionally quarterback-heavy races for the Heisman, McGuire’s insistence on Rodriguez sheds light on the linebacker’s pivotal role in the Texas Tech defense.
As the Red Raiders prepare to face Kansas State on Saturday, October 30, the stress will be on maintaining defensive integrity against Wildcat quarterback Avery Johnson, described as “really explosive” by McGuire.
Texas Tech aims to improve their record against Kansas State, a team they haven’t beaten since 2008. With a balanced offensive and defensive approach, McGuire expects to harness Rodriguez’s impact to break that losing streak.
With the Red Raiders standing at 7-1 and on the rise in the Big 12, Rodriguez’s performance will be key in their upcoming battle. His continued excellence might catapult him into wider recognition, especially as the team competes on national stages.
