Texas Teen Wows Judges with Soulful Audition on American Idol

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Canaan James Hill, a 17-year-old from Dallas, Texas, captivated judges during his audition on Sunday night’s episode of “American Idol” with a powerful rendition of Earnest Pugh‘s song “I Need Your Glory.” Hill, who graduated high school early, is now pursuing a career in preaching and showcased his impressive vocal talent, leaving a lasting impression on both the judges and the audience.
As Canaan began his performance, it wasn’t just his singing that moved the audience but also the energy he brought to the stage. Lionel Richie, one of the judges, was so inspired by Hill’s performance that he leaped from his seat to dance along, expressing his appreciation for the contestant’s remarkable voice. Fellow judge Luke Bryan also shared his enthusiasm, shouting in admiration as Canaan continued to sing.
Richie, visibly moved, approached Hill after the performance. “That was powerful,” he said, placing both hands on the contestant’s shoulders. “You have been so blessed.” Judge Carrie Underwood expressed her astonishment, stating she was left “speechless” by Hill’s vocals. Bryan reflected, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Following the unanimous approval from the judges, Richie awarded Canaan a coveted “Platinum Ticket,” which allows the recipient to bypass the first round of Hollywood Week. “It means you can bypass the first round of Hollywood, and you get to sit back and watch all the people you’re gonna slay,” he explained as he handed over the ticket, one of only three given out by the show’s judges.
Hollywood Week, a critical phase in the competition where contestants strive to advance further in their quest for stardom, begins Monday. With his victorious audition, Canaan James Hill is one step closer to achieving his dreams in the music industry.
