Thales Demonstrates RNLA’s GM200 MM/C Radar Tracking Capabilities During Live Firing Exercise
Thales, the technology company, showcased the tracking capabilities of the Ground Master 200 Multi Mission/Compact (GM200 MM/C) radar recently delivered to the Royal Netherlands Army (RNLA) during a live firing exercise.
The demonstration took place at the ‘t Harde firing range, a facility operated by the Dutch Ministry of Defence. The Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) was put to the test as it successfully tracked various projectiles, including 81 mm mortar rounds and 155 mm Panzerhaubitze (PzH) shells. Additionally, the radar monitored the flight paths of Puma unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the exercise.
Attendees at the event included international military officials, local journalists, and industry experts. The real-time tracking capabilities of the GM200 MM/C radar were displayed on large screens, providing a comprehensive view of the trajectories and flight paths of the projectiles and UAVs in both 2D and 3D formats.
The MMR accurately identified the origin and impact points of the mortar and artillery fire, showcasing its precision in tracking and monitoring military activities. The radar was able to track the entire trajectory of the projectiles, from the moment of launch to impact, even in conditions with multiple simultaneous firings.
While originally planning to track a Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35A Joint Strike Fighter during the exercise, poor weather conditions forced the cancellation of this segment. However, the organisers clarified that the decision was not related to the radar’s capabilities in detecting the aircraft but rather due to safety considerations.
