Thoko Didiza, the former Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, has been elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly in a highly anticipated session that saw political manoeuvring at play.

As the National Assembly was suspended for lunch, Didiza’s victory marked a significant turning point as she secured the position amidst speculation of backroom deals between the ANC and DA.

Opposing Didiza was the EFF‘s Veronica Mente, the National Chairperson of the EFF, who presented a formidable challenge during the nomination process.

The political landscape further shifted as it was rumored that Cyril Ramaphosa, the current President, would retain his position following a strategic agreement among the ANC, DA, and IFP.

The essence of collaboration in a Government of National Unity was palpable as Didiza’s appointment set the stage for further negotiations and strategic alignments within the assembly.

The first sitting of the 7th National Assembly commenced with an air of anticipation, marred only by the delayed arrival of the EFF leader Julius Malema, further highlighting the differing agendas at play.

Notably absent from the session were the MK’s would-be MPs, showcasing a fragmented political landscape ripe with complex alliances and oppositions.

The political tides continue to ebb and flow within the halls of the National Assembly, with Didiza’s tenure as Speaker signaling a new chapter in South Africa’s political narrative.
