Tim Allen is making his return to network television with the new ABC sitcom ‘Shifting Gears,’ premiering January 8 at 8 p.m. ET. The show marks Allen’s third series on ABC, following the success of ‘Home Improvement‘ and ‘Last Man Standing.’ Allen stars as Matt Parker, a widowed classic car restoration shop owner, alongside Kat Dennings, who plays his estranged daughter Riley.

The series explores the dynamic between Matt and Riley as she moves back in with her two children following a divorce. Despite their rocky relationship, the duo shares a unique real-life connection: both Allen and Dennings were born on June 13, albeit 33 years apart. ‘Kat’s so freaking talented. We’re born on the same day, which is kind of weird. Certainly different ages!’ Allen shared in a recent interview.

‘Shifting Gears’ also features a strong supporting cast, including Seann William Scott and Daryl Mitchell as mechanics at Matt’s shop. The show blends family drama with Allen’s signature comedic style, though it doesn’t shy away from addressing his character’s conservative views. Matt frequently rants about modern societal changes, from pickleball to mocktails, which some critics have noted as reminiscent of Allen’s stand-up routines.

Despite its predictable plotlines, the show has been praised for the chemistry between Allen and Dennings. ‘They actually seem like father and daughter,’ one review noted, highlighting their ability to balance humor with heartfelt moments. Dennings, known for her role in ‘2 Broke Girls,’ brings sharp wit and emotional depth to her character, making her a worthy counterpart to Allen’s gruff persona.

While ‘Shifting Gears’ may not break new ground in the sitcom genre, it offers a familiar yet entertaining formula for fans of Allen’s previous work. The series is executive produced by Allen and several veterans from ‘Last Man Standing,’ ensuring a tone consistent with his earlier successes. Whether the show will secure a second season remains to be seen, but its premiere is already generating buzz among viewers eager for a new family comedy.
