Minnesota, MN – The Minnesota Timberwolves are entering a crucial stretch of games, facing significant challenges as they battle some of the NBA’s top teams over the next few weeks. Currently riding a wave of momentum with eight wins in their last ten games, the Wolves kick off this challenging period tonight against the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Timberwolves, who previously squared off against the Cavaliers on January 18, suffered a 124-117 defeat, as they struggled to contain star guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, who combined for an impressive 65 points that night, underscored by nine three-pointers and 17 free-throw attempts. The Cavaliers enter this matchup with a healthy roster, bolstered by De'Andre Hunter’s debut following his trade from the Atlanta Hawks. Hunter notably scored 35 points against the Wolves in their recent victory over Atlanta on January 27.
After facing Cleveland, the Timberwolves will return to Minnesota to host the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. However, the Bucks will be operating below full strength, as superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo faces at least another week on the sidelines due to calf soreness. Milwaukee is reeling, having recorded six losses in their last nine games, including four consecutive defeats without Antetokounmpo.
Following the matchup with the Bucks, the Timberwolves will hit the road again to battle the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. This will be a back-to-back set for both teams; however, while Minnesota travels from Minneapolis, Oklahoma City will be returning home after playing in Miami on Wednesday night. The Thunder emerged victorious in their previous meeting with the Wolves, winning 113-107 on New Year’s Eve.
Amid this challenging schedule, the Timberwolves are looking forward to the All-Star break from February 14-20, which is expected to provide an opportunity to reintegrate key injured players back into the lineup. Notably, Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo could potentially return when the Wolves visit the Houston Rockets on February 21. DiVincenzo, sidelined since January 15 due to a toe sprain, and Randle, who has missed games since January 30 with a right adductor strain, would be valuable assets as the team endeavors to improve in the standings.
The Rockets, currently struggling with six losses in their last seven games, hold a 1-2 record against the Timberwolves this season, with their single win occurring in overtime during a close game in Minneapolis on November 26.
The ensuing fixtures in this challenging slate feature back-to-back encounters against the Thunder on February 23-24, starting with a home game at Target Center followed by a rematch in Oklahoma City. The Timberwolves will subsequently have a brief respite before a highly anticipated clash against the revamped Los Angeles Lakers on February 27, which will mark Luka Doncic‘s first game with the Lakers after his recent trade and recovery from a calf injury sustained during a game against Minnesota on Christmas Day.
Throughout this intense 17-day stretch, the Timberwolves, currently positioned sixth in the Western Conference standings, 2.5 games behind the Lakers, three behind the Rockets, and four back of the third-place Nuggets, must rise to the occasion as they face off against prolific players such as Mitchell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, LeBron James, and Doncic.
