Tina Knowles Opens Up About Divorce in New Memoir

Los Angeles, CA – Tina Knowles, the 71-year-old author and television personality, revealed her decision to file for divorce from ex-husband Richard Lawson in her newly released memoir, ‘Matriarch.’ The memoir hit shelves last month, shedding light on her emotional journey during and after the separation, which occurred in July 2023.
In the book, Knowles reflected on a pivotal moment in July when she woke up recognizing that her marriage “needed to end.” Despite acknowledging Lawson’s admirable qualities from their ten years together, she felt the relationship was no longer serving them. “I deserved so much more,” she wrote, emphasizing her pursuit of happiness.
Knowles communicated her feelings to Lawson for a while but ultimately felt it was necessary to prioritize her well-being. “I will never feel whole, cherished, loved, and respected in this relationship,” she recounted in her memoir. Despite external pressures to showcase a ‘second chance at love,’ she concluded that choosing herself was paramount.
She filed for divorce with a heavy heart, stating, “I have not lost a night of sleep over it.” This marked a significant change from her experience after her first marriage ended in 2011, when she felt as if she “was going to die.”
Knowles mentioned that following the divorce, she experienced some criticism online, mostly from women, prompting her to reflect on her own encounters with internalized sexism. However, she reported a shift in focus towards activities that bring her joy beyond romance, resulting in increased self-confidence.
At an event the same month she filed for divorce, Knowles received support from fellow guests, including Perry, who recognized her decision to prioritize her happiness. He highlighted the importance of showing women that they can also find fulfillment outside of failing marriages.
As she continues her journey, Knowles hinted at a new relationship, stating, “I am spending time with a friend who is a very nice gentleman. We’ll see what happens.”
