New York Times Connections Word Game

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The New York Times’ popular daily word game, Connections, sets players on a unique challenge each day. For April 1, 2025, users faced a puzzle that tested their skills with symbols and letters, adding an element of surprise for April Fool’s Day.

Players had to arrange a grid of 16 items into four distinct groups of four. This day’s puzzle featured a mix of currency symbols, emoticon representations, and categorization challenges that piqued the interest of avid gamers. Kris Holt, a contributor for Forbes and a gaming enthusiast, shared his experience with the game, expressing both excitement and anxiety due to the peculiar grid.

“I haven’t looked at today’s Connections yet. It’s… it’s bad, isn’t it?” Holt wrote, highlighting the challenges presented by the day. Players, including Holt, are known for respecting the integrity of the game, playing without automated assistance to maintain authenticity in their scores.

The structure of a Connections puzzle involves color-coded groups wherein the yellow category is typically the simplest, while the purple cohort often presents the most difficulty, requiring clever wordplay or lateral thinking to solve.

“The currency symbols were the easiest ones to knock out,” Holt noted, referring to the correct grouping that included the dollar ($), pound (£), yen (¥), and euro (€). “But when it comes to more complex categories like emoticons, it was a bit trickier,” he added, revealing how players must think critically as items may tempt them to fit into more than one category.

Today’s categories included: the yellow group focused on currency symbols; the green on combinations of elements; the blue tackled emoticon representations; and the purple emphasized directional cues. Each hint provided players with a warm-up strategy to unveil their logic before diving into the puzzle.

“It was gratifying to extend my streak to 35 wins,” Holt concluded after deciphering the day’s grids. This commitment to daily play cultivates a dedicated community that engages and collaborates on hints. Holt initiated a discussion group where enthusiasts can share tips and experiences while cultivating a supportive environment for novices and veterans alike.

In pursuit of mastering the game, players may also browse an archived database available to those with an NYT subscription, allowing them to revisit previous puzzles and strategies at their leisure.

Players eager to tackle tomorrow’s challenge can expect new categories and configurations. “Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Wednesday’s game,” Holt encouraged his fellow gamers, maintaining enthusiasm for the daily engagement with the New York Times’ Connections.
