Titans Hire John Fassel as Special Teams Coordinator After Disastrous Season
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans have hired John “Bones” Fassel as their new special teams coordinator, according to sources. The move comes as the team seeks to rebound from a dismal 3-14 season in 2024, marked by struggles across multiple units, including special teams.
Fassel, 51, replaces Colt Anderson, who faced significant criticism during his first season in the role. Anderson’s tenure was marred by blocked punts, poor coverage, and ball security issues, which contributed to the Titans’ struggles. Fassel, one of the most respected special teams coaches in the NFL, brings a wealth of experience to Nashville.
Most recently, Fassel served as the special teams coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys under head coach Mike McCarthy from 2020 to 2024. His contract was not renewed after the Cowboys missed the playoffs this past season. Prior to Dallas, Fassel held special teams roles with the Baltimore Ravens (2005-07), Oakland Raiders (2008-11), and St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2012-19). In 2016, he served as the Rams’ interim head coach for three games following the firing of Jeff Fisher.
“Having Fassel’s experience should be a huge help for Brian Callahan and his staff as they look for ways to improve from their disastrous 3-14 campaign,” said a source close to the team. Callahan, the Titans’ head coach, is entering his second season and is under pressure to turn the franchise around.
The Titans’ special teams unit was a glaring weakness in 2024. Punter Ryan Stonehouse had kicks blocked in the first two games, and opponents led the NFL in punt return yards while ranking second in yards per kickoff return. Rookie returner Jha’Quan Jackson also struggled with ball security, leading to his benching in December.
Fassel’s hiring is part of a broader organizational overhaul. The Titans recently dismissed general manager Ran Carthon, who posted a 9-25 record over two seasons, and replaced him with Mike Borgonzi, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs. Borgonzi was officially announced as the new GM on Friday after the team interviewed 10 candidates.
The Titans’ offense also struggled mightily in 2024, ranking among the league’s worst due to turnovers, inconsistent quarterback play from Will Levis and Mason Rudolph, and issues at right tackle. The team ended the season on a six-game losing streak, tied for the longest in the NFL.
Fassel’s track record of success and innovative approach to special teams could provide a much-needed boost for the Titans as they aim to rebuild and compete in the AFC South.
