TMZ Faces Backlash for Publishing and Later Deleting Graphic Photos of Liam Payne’s Death
American tabloid TMZ has come under intense criticism for its handling of the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne. The outlet published, and later deleted, graphic photos related to Payne’s death, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the public, Payne’s family, and other celebrities.
Liam Payne died on Wednesday outside a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from his third-floor balcony. TMZ initially included a cropped image of Payne’s lifeless body in their reporting, which was met with immediate backlash. The image was later taken down, but the damage had already been done.
Toni Cornell, the daughter of late musician Chris Cornell, was among those who criticized TMZ’s actions. She recalled the distressing coverage of her father’s death and condemned TMZ for their decision to publish such graphic content again. Cornell expressed her dismay on Instagram, highlighting the distress such photos cause to the families of the deceased.
Cheryl Cole, Payne’s former partner and the mother of his 7-year-old son Bear, also slammed the media coverage. In an Instagram post, Cole mourned Payne’s loss and criticized the “abhorrent reports and media exploitation” that followed his death. She emphasized the harm such reports could cause to those left behind, particularly their son who will eventually have access to these disturbing images.
This incident is not the first time TMZ has faced criticism for its journalistic practices. The outlet has previously been scolded for its handling of celebrity deaths, including those of Kobe Bryant and Tom Petty. The controversy surrounding Payne’s death has reignited discussions about ethical journalism and the impact of sensationalized reporting on grieving families.
