Tom Cruise Receiving Bfi Fellowship Award

London, England – American actor Tom Cruise will be honored with the British Film Institute‘s (BFI) highest accolade, the BFI Fellowship, on May 12, recognizing his significant contributions to the UK film industry over his four-decade career.

Cruise expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, “I am truly honored by this acknowledgment. I’ve been making films in the UK for more than 40 years and have no plans to stop.” He emphasized the talent within the UK film community, saying, “The UK is home to incredibly talented professionals – actors, directors, writers, and crews, as well as some of the most stunning locations in the world.”

The award presentation will take place during the BFI Chair’s Dinner in London, the day after Cruise participates in a public “In Conversation” event at BFI Southbank. This event marks the beginning of a month-long retrospective celebrating Cruise’s work, which will feature screenings of 27 of his films throughout May.

Cruise has a longstanding relationship with the UK film industry, having filmed major projects including several in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in locations such as London, Birmingham, and Yorkshire. His commitment to working in the UK has fostered local talent and provided job opportunities, as many BFI Film Academy and Future Skills programme alumni have been involved in his recent productions.

“Tom has brought so much to the UK as a producer,” said BFI Chair Jay Hunt. “In doing so, he also supports our studios and puts our locations on a world stage, creating jobs and inspiring the next generation of film talent.” Hunt described Cruise as “one of the world’s great actors,” praising his ability to delight audiences across various genres.

Cruise’s career milestones include receiving an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival in 2022 and winning three Golden Globe Awards. He has also received four Academy Award nominations. Recently, in December 2024, he was awarded the US Navy’s distinguished public service award for his contributions to the military through his roles in films like “Top Gun.”

The BFI Fellowship joins a prestigious list of past recipients, including cinematic legends such as Akira Kurosawa, Elizabeth Taylor, and Martin Scorsese. The BFI’s recognition of Cruise underscores the significant impact he has had within the film industry both in the UK and worldwide.
