Tony Gilroy And Diego Luna Interview Andor

LOS ANGELES, CA — As anticipation builds for the second season of the acclaimed series ‘Andor‘, creator Tony Gilroy emphasized the project’s unique nature and the unlikely collaboration it represents in the television landscape. In a recent interview with Empire, Gilroy described ‘Andor’ as ‘uncompromising TV’, portraying the complexities of revolution in the Star Wars universe.

‘This show will never happen again,’ Gilroy stated, reflecting on the comprehensive support he received from various figures at Lucasfilm. ‘Not because we’re so great, but because no one’s ever gonna start a show on this scale again.’ With its immersive storytelling and high production values, ‘Andor’ has set a new benchmark for television series.

Gilroy shared that the protection surrounding the production was crucial. ‘We were protected all the way down the line,’ he remarked. ‘Kathy Kennedy, Bob Iger, and the audience all played a part in allowing us the freedom to explore this narrative.’ This extensive backing created an environment where the team could craft authentic storytelling without fear.

The upcoming season, premiering on Disney+ on April 23, is set to delve deeper into the character of Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna. Gilroy noted that the success of previous Star Wars series, particularly ‘The Mandalorian‘, created a platform for ‘Andor’. ‘Their success is what fueled the whole thing. No Baby Yoda, no Andor. Seriously,’ he added, underscoring the interconnectedness of these beloved franchises.

Despite the tonal differences between ‘Andor’ and ‘The Mandalorian’, Gilroy firmly believes that both projects coexist symbiotically. He criticized fan-driven narratives that attempt to create discord among the shows, asserting, ‘We don’t have a show without them.’ This shared universe enriches the storytelling, allowing for diverse narratives to thrive.

As the premiere date approaches, excitement grows among fans eager to see how the series continues to innovate within the Star Wars mythos. Gilroy has made it clear that the dedication and passion of the team behind ‘Andor’ are pivotal to its success. The full interview highlighting this journey will be available in Empire’s latest issue, on sale April 10.
