Top Game Designers Join Critical Role Productions Amid Growing Popularity

Los Angeles, CA — Critical Role Productions continues to make waves in the gaming world, announcing on June 16, 2025, that renowned game designers Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford are joining its Darrington Press division. The duo, once pivotal figures at Wizards of the Coast, has extensive experience in shaping Dungeons & Dragons, the world’s most popular tabletop role-playing game.
Perkins served as the creative director for Dungeons & Dragons, guiding its storylines, while Crawford was responsible for overseeing the game’s rules as game director. Their exit from Wizards of the Coast in early 2025 left many fans curious about their next steps. Now, they are set to bring their expertise to Darrington Press, aiming to impact the tabletop gaming community positively.
Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham expressed excitement over the pair’s arrival, emphasizing their influential status in the tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) industry. ‘They are two of the biggest names that we’re certainly aware of and that have influenced TTRPGs and the games that we played,’ he said. Perkins noted that the opportunity to work with Crawford and the talented team at Critical Role inspired him to come out of retirement.
‘What brought me out of retirement was the chance to work with Jeremy and the brilliant folks at Critical Role on things that have a lasting, positive impact on the world,’ said Perkins. Crawford echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on his 18 years at Wizards of the Coast. ‘I love the game and its team, but I was ready for a new adventure.’
The game designers plan to foster a more inclusive and diverse gaming environment. They believe the industry can benefit from welcoming varied creators and experiences, which can create a more engaging and inviting space for everyone. ‘Diverse creators and diverse games help to create an industry that feels more inviting to everyone,’ they said in a joint email response.
As Perkins and Crawford prepare to dive into their new roles at Darrington Press, they are already brimming with ideas for future projects. ‘Oh, heaven’s yes!’ Perkins exclaimed, indicating that exciting developments are forthcoming.
