Tragic Boating Crash Claims Life at Smith Lake Fishing Tournament

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. — A multi-boat crash during a Major League Fishing (MLF) tournament on Smith Lake left one person dead and several others injured Wednesday morning.
The accident took place during Day 2 of the Tackle Warehouse Invitational, according to an MLF statement. Flint Davis, a professional angler from Leesburg, Georgia, was among those involved in the incident. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to assist those affected.
“Major League Fishing confirms that a serious boating accident occurred this morning on Lewis Smith Lake,” the statement read. “Emergency personnel and local authorities responded immediately and remain on scene managing the situation.”
Out of respect for those involved, MLF declined to provide further details, stating they are working closely with law enforcement and emergency officials. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The tragedy marks a rare serious accident for Smith Lake, known for its safety during fishing events. Alabama Senate Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman), who himself was involved in a jet-ski accident last summer, expressed his condolences on social media.
“We wanted to let the families know, the people that were in the Major League Fishing wreck on Smith Lake, that our prayers are with you and your families,” Gudger said. “We know what that is like, being in an accident nine months ago and being airlifted to UAB and placed in the ICU. It’s tough, not only on those who are injured but also on their families. We want to make sure that they know that we love them and that God is with them.”
In light of the accident, MLF has canceled the remainder of the fishing tournament. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the ongoing investigation.
