Tragic History Surrounds Release of Western Film ‘Rust’

Santa Fe, New Mexico — The long-intended release of the Western film ‘Rust’ comes with a heavy emotional backdrop. The film stars Alec Baldwin, who also wrote the story and serves as a producer. Its production was abruptly halted in October 2021 after a prop gun discharged, tragically killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Following the incident, legal issues ensued, with Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed facing manslaughter charges. These cases drew extensive media attention, casting doubt on the future of the film. Despite the challenges, the decision was made to complete ‘Rust’ to honor Hutchins’ legacy. Her widower, Matthew Hutchins, became an executive producer and will receive profits from the film alongside their son.
‘It is bittersweet to see this film come to life after such a tragic event,’ said a film critic. The breathtaking cinematography, credited to Hutchins and later to Bianca Cline, stands out as one of the film’s strongest elements, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood‘s acclaimed ‘Unforgiven.’ While ‘Rust’ runs 139 minutes and could benefit from tighter editing, it offers a reflective take on classic Western themes.
The plot unfolds in 1880s Wyoming, where teenager Lucas Hollister, played by Patrick Scott McDermott, struggles to care for his younger brother, Jacob. After an accidental killing during a confrontation at a local store, Lucas finds himself sentenced to hang. This dire situation changes dramatically when his estranged grandfather, Harland Rust, portrayed by Baldwin, breaks him out of jail.
The film shifts across various southwestern states, introducing characters like U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and bounty hunter Fenton “Preacher” Lang. As they pursue Rust and Lucas, the themes of loss and redemption emerge amidst their treacherous journey through dangerous territories.
Critics have highlighted the film’s aesthetic appeal, particularly Hutchins’ artistry, stating, ‘It is truly stunning and a testament to her talent.’ Although parts of the narrative feel padded with excessive dialogue and unnecessary characters, the performances, especially by Baldwin and Josh Hopkins, have been acknowledged for their depth. Hutchins is honored throughout the film, with a dedication in the credits reading: ‘For Halyna… What can we do to make this better?’ ‘Rust’ will release theatrically and on VOD on May 2, 2025.
