Tragic Passing of Former Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Sarah Carter, the former mayor of Maribyrnong, has been found dead at her home in Melbourne’s west. The 45-year-old councillor, who was well-loved in her community, had been a dedicated public servant for 16 years.
Emergency services responded to a call on Tuesday afternoon and discovered her body at her residence on Village Way. According to officials from the Victoria Police, they do not suspect foul play, and a report is being created for the coroner.
The City of Maribyrnong expressed their shock and sadness at the news, stating that Councillor Carter’s sudden passing is a significant loss for the community she tirelessly supported. They highlighted her remarkable achievement of being Maribyrnong’s first three-time female mayor.
Premier Jacinta Allan shared her sorrow, noting that it was a tragedy to lose someone so young, who had so much potential and passion to continue serving the community. She emphasized that Sarah’s loss is felt by many.

Carter’s commitment to her community was well recognized; she recently returned from an assignment in Vanuatu with Save The Children, where she worked on initiatives to support vulnerable children globally.
Many fellow councillors have taken to social media to express their grief. They remember her as a bright, warm, and compassionate person who was always willing to go the extra mile for her community.
Footscray MP Katie Hall commemorated her fierce spirit, stating that Sarah dedicated her life to bettering the lives around her, and it is hard to comprehend why she had to leave us so soon.
In addition to her council duties, Carter was a vocal advocate against gender-based violence and served as the Gender Equity Ambassador for Maribyrnong, aiming to create a safer community for all.
