Tragic Passing of Rising South Korean Star Kim Sae-ron at 24

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron, known for her compelling performances, was found dead at her home in Seongdong-gu on February 15. She was 24 years old.

A friend discovered Kim’s body after she failed to attend a scheduled meeting. According to police, there were no signs of foul play, and the investigation has classified her death as a suicide.

Born in 2000 in Seoul, Kim began her acting career at just nine years old. She gained international attention for her role in “A Brand New Life” (2009), which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. This made her one of the youngest actors to ever attend the prestigious event. Kim solidified her rising stardom with her performance in the 2010 film “The Man From Nowhere.”

Throughout her career, Kim transitioned from child roles to more complex characters, showcasing her versatility in notable films such as “The Neighbor” (2012) and “A Girl at My Door” (2014). She also made a significant impact in television with shows like “The Queen’s Classroom” (2013) and the fantasy series “Mirror of the Witch” (2016).

However, Kim’s career faced a significant setback in May 2022 following a driving under the influence incident that occurred in Seoul’s Gangnam District. The accident resulted in property damage and led to a fine of KRW 20 million (approximately $13,815). This incident prompted her to take a hiatus to address personal and health issues.

She was slated to appear in the 2023 Netflix series “Bloodhounds,” but much of her role was edited out due to the DUI incident, and she subsequently withdrew from the series “Trolley.” Plans for her stage return in the play “Dongchimi” were also abandoned, and reports indicated she was set to star in the upcoming film “Guitar Man.”

In a statement following her death, Kim’s former agency, Gold Medalist, expressed their sorrow: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of Kim Sae-ron’s passing. May she rest in peace.”
