TransUnion Settles Class Action Over Credit Report Disputes

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A major credit bureau, TransUnion, has agreed to a class action settlement regarding its handling of credit file disputes. The settlement stems from claims that TransUnion did not conduct reasonable investigations into disputes raised by consumers and failed to remove disputed hard checks from credit reports.
Although TransUnion has not admitted any wrongdoing, the company has opted to settle the matter to avoid further legal action. Affected consumers do not need to fill out any forms to receive a settlement payment.
Errors on credit reports can have serious consequences for consumers, influencing crucial financial decisions like purchasing a car or refinancing a home. “You don’t want surprises when you’re doing something like that,” said Pamela Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau.
If individuals discover inaccuracies in their credit reports, such as unfamiliar lenders or incorrect amounts, they can initiate a dispute. This process begins with disputing the information with the credit reporting agency or agencies involved, followed by addressing the issue with the business that provided the erroneous information.
The final approval hearing for the TransUnion settlement is set for late July. Updates on the outcome will be provided to consumers who have participated in the dispute process.
