Trump Honors Greek Independence Day with Proclamation at White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On March 24, 2025, President Donald Trump hosted Greek-American leaders and guests at the White House to commemorate the 204th anniversary of Greek Independence Day, proclaiming March 25 as a national day of celebration for both Greek and American democracy.
The event, which has been a tradition at the White House since 1987, honors the Greek Revolution of 1821, which ultimately led to Greece‘s liberation from Ottoman rule. During his remarks, Trump reflected on the deep historical ties between the United States and Greece, stating, “Our great American experiment was inspired by the ideas about liberty, self-government, and the rule of law that traced their roots to ancient Greece.”
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who presented a Holy Cross to Trump during the ceremony, expressed gratitude for the recognition afforded to the Greek-American community. “Today, Mr. President, you bestow extraordinary honor upon the Greek-American people with the annual Greek Independence Day celebration here at the White House,” he said. “We are here to celebrate the world’s first democracy, Greece, and the world’s greatest democracy, the United States of America.”
The Holy Cross presented by the Archbishop symbolizes peace and strength, and he urged Trump to use it in his mission for global peace. “I pray you bring peace to the world and make America invincible!” he declared.
In attendance were numerous Greek-American leaders, including Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Greece, and various lawmakers. Trump acknowledged the contributions of the Greek-American community, which he stated has grown to more than 3 million individuals. “You represent the best of America,” Trump said, as he thanked those present for their hard work and dedication.
Trump further emphasized the importance of U.S.-Greece relations, noting joint military cooperation at Souda Bay, which enhances security and stability in Europe. “Greece is one of our Nation’s oldest friends and a valued NATO ally,” he stated.
The proclamation signed by Trump calls for Americans to observe Greek Independence Day with ceremonies and events, highlighting the enduring bonds of friendship and shared values of liberty and democracy. Each year, March 25 is celebrated with parades and various festivities in Greece and among the Greek diaspora worldwide.
“As we celebrate this day, we also remember the Guardians of Democracy—those who fought for liberty in Greece and the United States,” Trump said. “By honoring this legacy, we fortify our commitment to preserve freedom for future generations.”
