Two Hawaii Principals Named National Distinguished Principals of the Year

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Hawaii Department of Education announced Monday that two local school principals have been recognized as the 2025 National Distinguished Principals of the Year. Lorelei Aiwohi, principal of Kaimuki High School, and Jacquelyn McCandless, principal of Maui Waena Intermediate School, received the prestigious honors from the Hawaii Association of Secondary School Administrators.
The award aims to celebrate outstanding leadership among middle and high school principals who have made strong commitments to their students, staff, and communities. In her 29 years of experience, Aiwohi has transformed Kaimuki High School into a model of student empowerment over the past two and a half years.
“I was so surprised and I’m so thrilled and honored,” Aiwohi said. “I was overwhelmed because I didn’t even think that it was going to happen today.” During her tenure, Aiwohi has expanded cultural clubs within the school, fostering pride, belonging, and mutual respect among students. “These initiatives are an example of my belief and responsibility to create a respectful learning environment,” she added, emphasizing her commitment to helping students pursue their academic and career goals.
Meanwhile, McCandless has been leading Maui Waena Intermediate School for the past eight years. “It feels surreal right now, but it is such a deep honor for our school,” she stated. “Not just for myself and my family, but the entire school community.” Her collaborative leadership style, which promotes active engagement of students, staff, and families in decision-making, has earned her recognition from DOE officials.
“As a leader, I believe everyone is a key player in the success of our school,” McCandless explained. “My goal is to have all stakeholders involved in collaborative decision-making processes so all voices are heard, joint decisions are made, and collective action plans are created and implemented. This approach fosters ownership and strengthens our school community.”
Both Aiwohi and McCandless will represent Hawaii at the National Association of Secondary School Principals in Washington, D.C., and will be honored alongside other state winners. They are also in contention for the national principal of the year title. In recognition of their remarkable work, both principals received a $2,000 check from the department.
