Tyrrell Hatton’s Tempestuous Outburst at PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tyrrell Hatton‘s volatile nature resurfaced during the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday, where he was caught on live television unleashing a foul-mouthed tirade after a mishap on the 18th hole. The 33-year-old English golfer was within a shot of the lead when he hit his tee shot into a water hazard, prompting a profanity-laden outburst aimed at his driver.
“Piece of shit,” Hatton shouted on the broadcast, followed by what seemed to be a curse word starting with ‘C’ directed at his equipment. The emotional response continued as he went on to score a triple-bogey seven, finishing his front nine with a 36 for a total of 73, leaving him at one under par.
“It wasn’t my finest moment on the course,” Hatton later admitted. “I was running hot in that moment. I’m pretty good sometimes at saying the wrong thing.”
This incident marks another chapter in Hatton’s ongoing struggles with temper on the course. Much of his frustration stems from the challenging conditions at Quail Hollow, where mud balls have plagued many players including Shane Lowry, who also expressed his discontent after hitting the fairway into a poor lie on the eighth hole.
Lowry slammed his club into the ground and exclaimed, “Fuck this place,” as he missed the cut by a single shot with a second round of 71. He later criticized the on-course officials for interfering during his play, which added to his frustration during a difficult round.
While Hatton and Lowry faced scrutiny for their behavior, others like Rory McIlroy managed to secure a spot for the weekend. McIlroy finished the day one over par following a second round of 69.
Hatton’s struggles were not unique. Jhonattan Vegas, the halfway leader at eight under par, salvaged his position despite a double bogey after reaching 10 under earlier in the round. Meanwhile, Matthieu Pavon surged into contention with an impressive 65, bringing him to six under.
As players like Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa also flirted with the top of the leaderboard, Hatton remains a formidable player despite the emotional rollercoaster, needing to tone down his antics on the course as he chases major championship glory.
With the weekend ahead, the pressure is on for all involved as they navigate the tests of Quail Hollow. Hatton’s ability to manage his emotions may ultimately dictate his success in the tournament.
