Anno 117 Pax Romana Game Preview

CHICAGO, IL — Ubisoft is gearing up to release Anno 117: Pax Romana, a city-building strategy game that allows players to create their own Roman Empire. Initially revealed at a recent press event, the game adds fresh concepts to the long-standing Anno franchise, enhancing player choice and freedom.

The game, targeted for release in Winter 2025, invites players to choose between two starting locations: Latium, a Mediterranean-themed area, or Albion, inspired by Celtic culture. Each choice influences gameplay and city-building strategies, offering different paths depending on the player’s decisions.

Players begin by selecting one of two protagonists with unique traits, significantly impacting storylines and interactions with other leaders. The game’s eight main attributes, including Income, Population, and a new Belief system, guide players as they manage resources and satisfy the needs of their growing populace.

Notably, the Discovery Tree mechanics allow for personalized enhancements. With over 150 unlockable perks, players can focus on economic growth, civic development, or military capabilities, introducing depth and customization to gameplay. For instance, choosing a Roman deity can provide specific bonuses tailored to the player’s strategic goals.

While the emphasis on city management and resource gathering remains, combat is noted to be optional, allowing players to approach situations through diplomacy or warfare. The developers have highlighted the importance of an onboarding experience to make the game accessible, although initial reports indicate that learning the game’s systems may present a challenge for newcomers.

Visually stunning, Anno 117: Pax Romana includes a detailed day/night cycle, atmospheric weather, and vibrant city life. Players can create a range of buildings from libraries to barracks to cater to the varied needs of their citizens, truly embodying the Roman experience.

The team at Ubisoft Mainz aims to maintain the franchise’s legacy while appealing to a broader audience, and there’s optimism as the anticipated launch draws near. “It’s about creating space for player choice and immersion,” says one developer, emphasizing the game’s potential to provide a deeply engaging experience.
