UConn Women’s Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma’s Wife: The Heart of the Team
Geno Auriemma, the renowned coach of UConn women’s basketball, has a secret weapon behind the scenes – his wife, Kathy Auriemma.
The Auriemmas, married for over four decades, have a unique love story that began on the basketball court at Montgomery County Junior College. Geno, then a basketball player, and Kathy, a cheerleader, first crossed paths during a game, leading to a romantic connection that has withstood the test of time.
After tying the knot in 1978, Geno and Kathy welcomed three children into their family: daughters Alysa and Jenna, and son Michael. Alysa, a graduate of Miss Porter’s School and an English teacher, followed her passion for theater in N.Y.C. before returning to Connecticut to coach basketball.
The Auriemmas’ family expanded further as they became grandparents to three grandchildren, including Christian James Stigliano, born to Jenna and her husband Todd Stigliano. Despite the demands of Geno’s coaching career, Kathy played a pivotal role in maintaining their home and nurturing their children.
While Geno is celebrated for his coaching achievements, he often credits Kathy as his pillar of support and guidance. Her unwavering loyalty and wisdom have been instrumental in his success both on and off the court.
Within the UConn women’s basketball team, Kathy holds a special place. Fondly referred to as Mrs. A, she is beloved by players for her nurturing demeanor and genuine care. Former player Stefanie Dolson described her as the heart of the team, highlighting Kathy’s unique ability to connect and provide emotional support.
