Ukraine Faces Challenges in Gaining African Support Amid Russian Ties

CAPE TOWN, South Africa – As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the Ukrainian government has tirelessly sought support from nations across Africa. Despite establishing new embassies, sending high-level delegations, and donating grain to various countries, the results have not been as favorable as hoped.
Over the past three years, Ukraine has lobbied extensively for allies to back its response to Russia‘s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022. However, in a recent United Nations resolution commemorating the anniversary of the invasion, only ten countries south of the Sahara voted in favor. This lack of support raises concerns for Ukraine as it struggles to gain a foothold on the continent.
African nations have generally maintained a neutral stance or leaned towards supporting Russia in this geopolitical battle. Many cite economic ties, historical connections, and a reluctance to engage in conflicts that do not directly affect them.
While lobbying efforts have included high-profile visits and humanitarian assistance, they have not consistently translated into political support. Observers indicate that, with the geopolitical landscape constantly evolving, maintaining unity within the African continent remains a significant challenge.
As Ukraine continues its dialogue, the road ahead appears tough, with numerous African governments prioritizing existing partnerships over new alliances with Ukraine.
