2024 Emmy Awards Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep, the acclaimed actress known for her numerous accolades, became the subject of an unexpected moment of humor at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards. Streep, aged 75, attended the ceremony where she was nominated for her role in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Despite not winning an award, Streep’s reaction to a lighthearted joke drew significant attention.

The incident occurred during the presentation of the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for which Streep was nominated. Presenting this award were Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson, real-life spouses and co-stars of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” McElhenney began by highlighting the importance of comedic roles, stating, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place. They show crucial support when it’s really needed.” Olson interjected humorously, comparing such roles to a jockstrap.

Amid laughter from the audience, Olson jestingly questioned if her husband was “calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap.” The camera then cut to Streep, who played along with the joke, mouthing “Oh God” in mock distress. McElhenney quickly reassured Streep, apologizing, “No! I’m so sorry, Meryl.”

Although Streep did not win, as “The Bear” star Liza Colón-Zayas claimed the award, she appeared to enjoy the evening alongside her friend Martin Short. Speculation about a romantic relationship between Streep and Short arose after they were seen together at the 2024 Golden Globes, but representatives later clarified their status as close friends.

The audience and social media had mixed reactions to the joke, with some finding it amusing while others considered it awkward. Nonetheless, this playful incident added a memorable twist to the ceremony, demonstrating Streep’s good-humored nature.
