The University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates 50 years of its Fine Arts program. Renowned for its vibrant and comprehensive Fine Arts offerings, UFS continues to be a beacon for aspiring artists.

In an exclusive interview with Johandi du Plessis, a lecturer at UFS and the recipient of the prestigious NYC Scholarship, insights were shared on the unique aspects of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at UFS and the ideal candidate it caters to.

According to du Plessis, the ideal candidate for the Fine Arts program at UFS is a creative individual brimming with curiosity, motivation, and a passion for exploring and expressing ideas visually. The program encourages the use of imagination and benefits from an entrepreneurial acumen for navigating the professional art world successfully.

A degree in Fine Arts from UFS paves the way for graduates to pursue a plethora of career prospects. These include avenues such as Exhibition Exposure, where students get to display their work, or participating in a myriad of Upcoming Events that showcase art from across the country and internationally.

UFS boasts several art galleries on campus that frequently host exhibitions, with one of the highlights being the safari of exhibitions on 1 July. This free event allows attendees to immerse themselves in art, providing a unique platform for students and art enthusiasts to engage with diverse fine art exhibitions.

The year 2024 holds special significance for the Fine Arts Department at UFS as it approaches its 50th anniversary. In celebration, the department will host an exciting exhibition and a series of events during the first week of August. Notable artists like Pauline Gütter, Elrie Joubert, and David Griessel will feature in the exhibition, open to the public from 1 August for two weeks.
