Upcoming Release of ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’
The official trailer for ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ has been released, generating significant interest ahead of the film’s national debut on September 21.
Christopher Reeve, renowned for his portrayal of Superman in the 1970s and 1980s, faced a life-altering challenge in May 1995 when he suffered a near-fatal horse-riding accident. The event left him paralyzed from the neck down, yet he continued to inspire millions as an advocate for spinal cord injury research.
The documentary, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, features interviews with Reeve’s three children and chronicles his legacy as an actor and activist. The trailer includes poignant memories shared by his son, Matthew Reeve, who reflects on their final moment together when he saw his father on his feet.
In a powerful voiceover, Reeve expresses regret about his accident, stating, ‘I ruined my life and everybody else’s.’ He recounts the emotional toll of his condition, expressing sorrow over lost moments with his family, including being unable to play with his son Will or share intimate moments with his wife, Dana Reeve, who passed away in 2006.
Following the accident, Reeve’s wife, Dana, offered him words of encouragement that motivated his journey forward: ‘You’re still you and I love you.’ This affirmation became a crucial part of his resilience.
‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ highlights not only the actor’s iconic role as Clark Kent but also his advocacy work in promoting disability rights. The film includes archival footage as well as insights from notable friends, including Susan Sarandon, who discusses Reeve’s connections and struggles throughout his life.
The film premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and will be shown in theaters across the United States on September 21 and again on September 25, in honor of Christopher Reeve’s birthday.
