Utah Utes’ Freshman QB Steps Up Amid Cam Rising’s Absence
In a pivotal clash within the 2024 Big 12 football calendar, Utah Utes‘ freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson took the reins in place of seasoned quarterback Cam Rising. The decision came following Rising’s ongoing recovery from a right-hand injury that has sidelined him for consecutive weeks.
Rising, who did not start in Utah’s Saturday fixture against the Oklahoma State, has been nursing the injury sustained on September 7 against Baylor. The injury occurred when he was pushed out of bounds and landed awkwardly on the opposition’s sideline, impacting his ability to play.
With Rising’s status being a game-time decision, as reported by ESPN, the Utes had to rely on Wilson. The young quarterback previously made his first career start against Utah State, demonstrating his potential by completing 20 of 33 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns.
Isaac Wilson, who is a true freshman, is notably the brother of former college quarterback Zach Wilson, currently playing in the NFL. This familial connection adds an intriguing layer to his emerging career.
Cam Rising, a seventh-year senior recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the Pacific-12 division during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, has faced continuous setbacks due to injuries. His injury in the 2022 Rose Bowl had already forced him to miss the entire 2023 season.
This recent development for the Utah Utes comes as they faced a demanding lineup in the Big 12, with high stakes and expectations placed on the burgeoning talent of Wilson to fill the void left by Rising’s absence.
