Valencia Cf La Liga Match Delay Flooding

MADRID, Spain — The La Liga match between Valencia and Oviedo has been postponed from Monday to Tuesday due to severe weather conditions in Valencia. A red weather alert has been issued for heavy rainfall and flooding risks in the region, prompting the league’s decision.

The match is now scheduled for Tuesday at 8:00 PM local time, contingent on improved weather conditions that ensure the safety of all participants. Last year, Valencia faced similar disruptions when severe floods killed over 200 people in the area.

Valencia is currently in 12th place in La Liga standings, while Oviedo, newly promoted to the top division this season, sits second from the bottom with one win and five losses.

The red alert for extreme thunderstorms, issued by the Generalitat‘s Emergency Coordination Center, led to the postponement request from the Valencia City Council due to forecasts indicating continued severe rainfall. Earlier on Monday, the city experienced moderate rains, with totals reaching 30 liters per square meter in La Torre and 21 liters in Mestalla.

In light of the meteorological alert, Valencia CF recommended that people take precautions and follow authorities’ guidance. Protección Civil sent messages urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to the risk of coastal flooding.

This postponement echoes the difficulties faced nearly a year ago during a significant flooding event that severely impacted multiple municipalities in Valencia province. Matches against Real Madrid and Espanyol were also postponed under similar circumstances.

Authorities have suspended all educational activities in the city, closed parks and gardens, and banned sports to prioritize public safety. The AEMET warned of extreme rainfall, with accumulations potentially exceeding 300 liters per square meter in a short period.
