Vanna White Reveals She Films ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Only 34 Days a Year

CULVER CITY, Calif. – Vanna White, co-host of the iconic game show “Wheel of Fortune,” shocked fans and radio hosts during a recent interview by revealing she films only 34 days each year. White’s disclosure came during her appearance on “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,” where she elaborated on the show’s unique filming schedule.
“We film about 34 days a year,” the 68-year-old television personality said, leading to gasps from host Elvis Duran and co-host Danielle Monaro. “That’s it. But we film six shows a day. Come on… You could feel bad for me!” Duran humorously responded, “I do not feel sorry for you one bit. That sounds like a great job.” Monaro added, “That’s six different dresses a day!” White agreed, saying, “It is!”
When asked if her filming schedule meant she has 331 days off a year, White replied, “Yeah, I guess so. I’ve never looked at it like that.” This surprising revelation highlights the unusual nature of White’s role on the show, which is based at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.
White, who began her career with the show in 1982, has faced changes in her professional life, especially following her longtime co-host Pat Sajak‘s retirement in June 2023. Last year, White negotiated a new contract amid concerns about her future, as executives reportedly labeled her “replaceable.” She secured a substantial pay increase after not having received a raise in 18 years, moving her earnings from around $3 million per year closer to parity with Sajak’s former salary of $15 million per season.
Reflecting on her adjustment to working with new co-host Ryan Seacrest, White said, “Of course, it’s been an adjustment not just for me, but for everyone who watches. Pat decided to retire. I saw him a few weeks ago; he looks happy and great. Ryan took over, and he’s doing a great job. He told me, ‘No one could ever replace Pat Sajak. I’m just here to fill in.’”
In her lengthy tenure on “Wheel of Fortune,” White has appeared in over 8,000 episodes, famously never repeating a dress until a production error in 2020. Her responsibilities during filming have included revealing letters on the puzzle board, a role she approaches with loyalty to the show she loves.
During her radio interview, she shared insights into her journey to stardom. White recounted how she secured her audition for the show after attending a taping of another Merv Griffin production, “Dance Fever.” She expressed her determination and timing that led to her selection as Sajak’s future co-host.
“I’m loyal,” White concluded, emphasizing her commitment to “Wheel of Fortune,” which has now entered its 42nd season. As the show evolves, White’s enduring presence remains a beloved aspect, ensuring the brand’s legacy continues.
