Vergil Ortiz Stops Erickson Lubin, Sets Up Clash with Jaron Ennis
ARLINGTON, Texas — Vergil Ortiz Jr. defeated Erickson Lubin in the second round of their fight on Saturday night, aiming to secure a big match against Jaron “Boots” Ennis. The bout took place at the AT&T Stadium, where Ortiz showcased his power.
From the opening bell, Ortiz pressured Lubin, pushing him towards the ropes. Although Lubin attempted to establish his jab, he found himself constantly retreating. By the second round, Ortiz capitalized on Lubin’s defensive struggles, landing a series of powerful right hands.
Referee James Green stepped in at 1:30 of Round 2 to stop the fight as Ortiz continued to unleash heavy punches. Ortiz’s trainer, Robert Garcia, rushed into the ring after the stoppage to check on Lubin.
“There wasn’t much to evaluate,” Ortiz said following his win. “I just capitalized on his mistakes. I took as much information as I could and used it. I kind of felt [the finish would come], but I had to believe in myself and that’s what I did.”
Jaron Ennis watched the fight from ringside, signaling that he wants to fight Ortiz next. Ortiz called Ennis into the ring, and both fighters expressed their eagerness for a showdown.
“I think this is the fight that has to happen, man,” Ortiz said. “I think this is it.” Ennis agreed, urging his promoter, Eddie Hearn, to make the match official.
“It’s the best fight in boxing,” Ennis declared. “I’m going to show the world why I’m the best in the world. … It don’t matter. The time is now. It’s the time, and I’ll make you pay for everything [your team] is saying.”
