Nikhil Joshi Jeopardy Contestant

NEW YORK, NY — Nikhil Joshi, a veterinarian from Montville, New Jersey, claimed victory in the latest episode of Jeopardy! on June 6, 2025, marking his second consecutive win on the iconic quiz show.

Joshi’s journey to the Jeopardy! stage began two years ago when he passed the Jeopardy! Anytime Test after several attempts. “My brother and I would watch Jeopardy! pretty much every night growing up. We’d always talk about getting on the show, but I never thought it would happen,” he said in an interview.

Competing against Elizabeth Hawkins from Oakland, California, and Brian O’Heron from St. Louis, Missouri, Joshi faced a fierce challenge during the game. After a shaky start where he had no money, a misstep by Hawkins allowed him to take the lead. By the end of the first round, Joshi had $4,200, while Hawkins trailed with $1,200 and O’Heron had $800.

In the Double Jeopardy round, O’Heron momentarily surged ahead after correctly answering a Daily Double. However, Joshi maintained his lead, ending the round with $16,200 as O’Heron held $8,800 and Hawkins dropped to $1,200.

The Final Jeopardy category, “Name That -Ism,” proved pivotal. The clue was, “This word first appears in English in a letter explaining that Candide is meant to ridicule the philosopher Leibniz.” Only Hawkins answered correctly with “optimism” but did not wager any money, leaving her with $1,200. O’Heron incorrectly answered “absurdism,” dropping to $1,399 after wagering $7,401.

Joshi answered “extensionism,” wagering $1,401 and bringing his final total to $14,799, making his two-day total $20,199. He will return to compete again on June 9.

After his impressive performance, Joshi reflected on his preparation, stating he studied intensely before the taping in April. “I trained by watching the show nightly, standing up, pretending to buzz in,” he shared.

Excited yet nervous about his time on the show, he admitted considering dropping out after receiving the call inviting him to compete. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing, “Whatever happens, happens. Doesn’t matter. I’m lucky to be here, I’m happy to be here.”
