Viola Davis Stars in Action-Packed Political Thriller ‘G20’

LOS ANGELES, CA — Viola Davis takes on the role of President Danielle Sutton in the new action thriller “G20,” streaming exclusively on Prime Video starting April 10, 2025. The film, directed by Patricia Riggen, combines elements of political drama and high-stakes action against the backdrop of a global economic conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
In a storyline that capitalizes on current political themes, Sutton is portrayed as a war hero navigating both familial responsibilities and a crisis when crypto-terrorists, led by Antony Starr‘s character Rutledge, storm the G20 summit, threatening world leaders and the global economy. Sutton’s daughter, Serena, played by Marsai Martin, adds a personal dimension to the plot, as her actions inadvertently place her family in jeopardy.
The film opens with a tense moment as Sutton discovers her daughter has bypassed Secret Service agents to hit a nightclub, setting the stage for a crisis that escalates when Rutledge and his associates seize control of the summit and take attendees hostage.
“In all the chaos, Danielle must balance her dedication to her family and her duty as president,” Davis noted during a recent press conference. “But it’s ultimately about finding strength in vulnerability. That balance is something many women can relate to, especially in leadership roles.”
The supporting cast includes Anthony Anderson as the First Gentleman, Ramón Rodríguez as her loyal bodyguard Manny, and several international leaders including Douglas Hodge, who plays the British Prime Minister. The film has garnered attention not only for its action sequences but for its portrayal of a woman of color in the highest political office.
Critics have been divided about the film’s execution. While some praise Davis for her commanding performance, noting that she convincingly handles both emotional moments and high-octane fight scenes, others feel that the script lacks depth. “The dialogue often feels simplistic, and at times the action sequences seem formulaic,” remarked one reviewer. “But Davis’s charisma elevates the material, bringing a tangible presence to the role.”
Amidst the chaos, Sutton transforms from a politically restrained leader into an action hero, wielding a weapon and engaging in hand-to-hand combat—showcasing that Davis can embody both grace and grit. “It was fun to step into this character’s shoes and explore both her vulnerabilities and strengths,” Davis added.
“G20” not only aims to entertain with its thriller tropes but also reflects the real-life challenges and skepticism surrounding female leaders today. The film’s creators have stated that while it entertains, it also sparks dialogue about representation in powerful roles.
The movie concludes with a climactic showdown, as Sutton employs her military training to outsmart the terrorists and save her family and fellow leaders, proving that even in fantasy, a strong, capable woman can emerge as a savior in dire circumstances.
With its blend of action and political commentary, “G20” represents a new chapter in the genre of action films featuring female leads. Critics are already eager to see how audiences respond to this fresh portrayal of strength and heroism in a world that often lacks diverse representation in leadership roles.
