Virginia Tech’s Bhayshul Tuten Impresses Amidst Injury Recovery
Elijah Brooks, the Virginia Tech running backs coach, has a unique approach to motivating Bhayshul Tuten, a standout player for the Hokies. According to Brooks, he challenges Tuten by suggesting limitations in his abilities during practice sessions, which only serves to fuel the player’s determination. “Sometimes, it’s individual matchups with defenders,” Brooks commented. “‘That linebacker is much better than you. That defensive lineman is going to stop you on fourth down.'”
Brooks observes that Tuten has an impressive level of self-confidence. “Whenever I challenge him and say he can’t do something, he gives me a look like, ‘Coach, you don’t know what you’re talking about,’ and he goes out there and responds,” Brooks added.
This season, Tuten’s performance reflects his drive and ability. He is on track to become the second Virginia Tech player in nine years to achieve more than 1,000 rushing yards in a season, a feat last accomplished by Khalil Herbert during the 2020 campaign. Tuten has already rushed for over 600 yards and scored nine touchdowns midway through the season.
Despite a knee sprain, Tuten has continued to be a key player on the field. Brooks highlighted Tuten’s resilience and critical role in the team. “Bhayshul Tuten is tough to take off the field,” Brooks noted. “There are things he can do that you can’t coach. He’s in his own class.” The upcoming game against Boston College is expected to see Tuten carrying a significant load, given that Virginia Tech recently had a bye week, allowing him to rest.
