Golden State Warriors Memphis Grizzlies Game Recap

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors achieved their first win of the season while missing key player Al Horford, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 131-118 on Monday night. Horford, 39, was sidelined as part of a season-long strategy to manage his playing time, which includes sitting out back-to-back games.

Coach Steve Kerr explained the decision, stating, “We opted to play him against the Clippers instead of Memphis because of their size advantage with Jaren Jackson Jr. and other big men.” This careful management forces Kerr to evaluate matchups on a game-by-game basis, particularly given basketball’s demanding schedule.

Moses Moody stepped up in Horford’s absence, scoring 20 points after halftime. Jonathan Kuminga also contributed significantly, recording a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors’ performance not only highlighted their depth but also showcased the potential of younger players stepping into prominent roles.

In previous matchups, the Warriors struggled without Horford, suffering a loss against the Portland Trail Blazers despite Steph Curry‘s 42-point effort. However, the team demonstrated improved coordination and defense against Memphis, assisting on 36 of their 44 field goals.

After a dynamic start that saw the Grizzlies momentarily leading 37-36 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors tightened their defense and surged ahead by halftime with a 65-61 lead. Coach Kerr noted, “I thought we connected the game in the second half — our offense helped our defense and vice versa.”

Steph Curry scored just 16 points, his lowest this season, yet the collective effort of the team was enough for the victory. Draymond Green led the team with 10 assists, despite not scoring in double figures. In a notable observation, Curry remarked on the need for the team to rely on others: “That’s how you get through the regular season.”

The Warriors are gearing up for their next game against the Los Angeles Clippers, where Horford is expected to return. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Chase Center.
