Washington Wizards Waive Guard Dillon Jones Ahead of Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Wizards announced on Sunday that they have waived guard Dillon Jones. This decision comes as the team finalizes its roster ahead of the opening day limit of 15 players.
Jones, who was selected as the No. 26 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Wizards, averaged 2.0 points in three preseason games. He played for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, where he contributed to the team’s 2024-25 NBA championship run, averaging 2.5 points per game in 54 regular-season appearances.
In a statement, Wizards general manager Will Dawkins explained, “We believe this was the best move for our team as we prepare for the upcoming season. We wish Dillon all the best in his future endeavors.”
Jones has faced a challenging transition over the past few months. After winning a championship with the Thunder, he was traded to Washington, but never seemed to find his footing with the squad. Reports indicate that he is likely to attract interest from other teams for a two-way contract.
In Oklahoma City, Jones averaged 2.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He had notable moments during the playoffs, including a 10-point game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Jones, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, had a standout college career at Weber State, averaging impressive statistics in his last season. He finished his college tenure with numerous program records, highlighting his skills and potential.
The Wizards’ decision to waive Jones is part of broader roster adjustments following the preseason. While other players have also been under scrutiny, Jones’s cut came as a surprise to some fans who thought he had shown promise during his limited play.
As Jones moves on from the Wizards, he may have the opportunity to sign with another NBA team or potentially join the Capital City Go-Go, the Wizards’ G-League affiliate. His time in Washington, however, now appears to be at an end.
