West Indies Lose Key Bowler Shamar Joseph to Injury Before India Tests

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — The West Indies cricket team has suffered a significant setback ahead of their two-Test series against India, as fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been ruled out due to injury. Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced the news on social media, revealing that Joseph, 24, will be reassessed prior to the team’s tour of Bangladesh, which starts later this month.
Joseph, who has made a mark in just 11 Tests, captured 51 wickets at an impressive average of 21.66. He notably took a five-wicket haul against Australia in January 2024, illustrating his potential as a match-winner for the team. His absence will be felt heavily, leaving the West Indies to rely on their remaining pace bowlers.
In his place, Johann Layne, a 22-year-old all-rounder from Barbados, has been called up for his first Test match. Layne has performed well in regional cricket, boasting 66 wickets in 19 first-class matches at an average of 22.28, while also contributing 495 runs with the bat.
The West Indies squad for the two-Test series in India is led by captain Roston Chase and includes vice-captain Jomel Warrican. The first Test is set to begin on October 2 in Ahmedabad, with the series concluding on October 14. Following the Tests, the team will head to Bangladesh for three One-Day Internationals and three T20 matches.
As the players prepare, Layne’s addition brings a mix of excitement and uncertainty; stepping into a fast-bowling group alongside established players like Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales. With Layne now in the squad, the West Indies face the challenge of compensating for the loss of Joseph as they aim for a successful series in India.
