Whoopi Goldberg Reunites ‘Sister Act 2’ Cast for Special 30th Anniversary Performance
Entertainment icon Whoopi Goldberg marked the 30th anniversary of the beloved film ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’ in a heartwarming fashion. Goldberg orchestrated a reunion of the movie’s original cast on ‘The View,’ not excluding the young choir members who stole hearts in the film.
Lead vocalist Ryan Toby, in his role as Ahmal in the movie, graced the stage once again alongside his co-stars. The ensemble, which included Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Monica Calhoun, and more, recreated the iconic choir scenes from the film, bringing nostalgia and joy to viewers.
Gospel classic ‘Oh Happy Day’ was sung in harmony, with Toby leading the choir just as he did on the big screen three decades ago. Another memorable performance was of ‘Joyful, Joyful,’ this time with the stage graced by students from New York’s LaGuardia High School of Music & Art. The emotional reunion left Goldberg in tears as she reminisced about the impact of the film.
Despite some cast members being unable to attend the reunion in person, they expressed their love through touching video messages. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who was just a teenager during filming, shared her admiration for Goldberg and her co-stars. The absence of Lauryn Hill, who played a pivotal role in the original movie, was noticed, but the spirit of the reunion remained vibrant.
Goldberg’s ongoing passion for the ‘Sister Act’ franchise was evident during the reunion, further fueled by her desire to create ‘Sister Act 3.’ Collaborating with Tyler Perry, Goldberg expressed interest in having fresh faces like Keke Palmer and Lizzo join the cast. The beloved actress aims to continue the legacy of the iconic series with new and exciting additions.
Previous homage to the film came from singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, who embodied Goldberg’s character, Sister Mary Clarence, during a Halloween special. Expressing the profound influence the film had on her dreams and aspirations, Hudson’s tribute showcased the enduring impact of ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’ on generations of fans.
