Widow Honors Late NHL Star Husband with Cremation Tattoos
MONMOUTH COUNTY, N.J. — Meredith Gaudreau, the widow of late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, is honoring her husband’s memory with a deeply personal tribute: three tattoos that incorporate his ashes. The 31-year-old recently had the word “forever” inked on her left ring finger and the names of their two children, Noa Harper, 2, and Johnny Edward, 11 months, tattooed on her forearm.
Johnny Gaudreau, a seven-time NHL All-Star, and his brother Matthew, 29, were killed in a car accident caused by an alleged drunk driver in August 2024. The tragedy occurred just one day before their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.
Tattoo artist Tay Nicole Clinch, who created the tattoos, shared that Meredith’s request was her first experience with cremation tattoos, a process that involves mixing tattoo ink with a loved one’s ashes. Clinch consulted a medical professional to ensure the procedure was safe and appropriate.
“Shortly after, she let me in on her story, and it’s safe to say I got pretty emotional when I realized this was a story I already knew of and was brought to tears over in the past,” Clinch wrote on social media. “This tattoo became an additional way to carry his presence with her alongside their babies.”
Meredith expressed her gratitude in the comments, writing, “Obsessed with them. Perfectly done by the best and coolest girl.”
In September, Meredith shared heartfelt memories of her husband and brother-in-law during a memorial service. Last month, she traveled to Calgary, Alberta, for a tribute to Johnny’s former teams, the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets. During the trip, she revealed another tattoo: her late husband’s name and his No. 13 on her wrist.
“I thought it would be cool to say that I did that in Calgary because that is where his autograph really took off,” Meredith explained in an interview. “It’s like, this is where it all began.”
Meredith, who had never gotten a tattoo before, admitted she was nervous but said she loves the results. “I was a little nervous,” she said, “but I really love it.”
The tattoos serve as a permanent reminder of Johnny’s legacy and the love they shared. Meredith’s tribute has resonated with fans and loved ones, offering a glimpse into her healing journey after the devastating loss.
