On Saturday, Wilfred Ndidi, a midfielder for the Super Eagles, surpassed the assist record held by Nigerian football legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha in the Premier League. This accomplishment was marked by Ndidi’s contribution of two assists during Leicester City’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Ndidi’s performance included providing critical assists for teammates Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi, showcasing his adaptability and skill on the field. Typically a defensive midfielder, Ndidi was strategically placed in an attacking midfield role by manager Steve Cooper, directly aiding centre-forward Jamie Vardy. This role adjustment paid off as they combined successfully for a goal.

With these two assists, Ndidi’s total in the Premier League reached twelve, thereby surpassing Okocha’s ten assists. Okocha, celebrated for his skillful play during his tenure with Bolton Wanderers, scored 14 goals and achieved ten assists over 125 Premier League appearances before leaving the team.

However, the record for the most assists by a Nigerian player in Premier League history remains with Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu, who boasts 33 assists. The list of top Nigerian assist providers further includes Shola Ameobi with 31, Alex Iwobi with 30, Kelechi Iheanacho with 25, Victor Moses with 20, Peter Odemwingie with 15, and Victor Anichebe with 13 assists.
