Winnipeg Blue Bombers Vs Edmonton Elks 2024

EDMONTON — On Saturday evening, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers secured a 27-14 victory over the Edmonton Elks in a Canadian Football League matchup at Commonwealth Stadium, marking their sixth consecutive win. The Blue Bombers’ defense was pivotal in the victory, contributing significantly to the outcome by forcing six turnovers from the Elks.

Brady Oliveira, the Blue Bombers’ running back, played a crucial role in the win. He rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries and scored two decisive touchdowns. These marked Oliveira’s first touchdowns of the season, despite having amassed over 1,000 rushing yards. “We got in the chicken box tonight,” Oliveira remarked, referring to his team’s nickname for the end zone. “It really felt good to celebrate with my boys.”

For the Edmonton Elks, quarterback Tre Ford struggled in his return as the starting quarterback. Ford’s performance included losing a fumble and throwing two interceptions. “I don’t think I played well,” admitted Ford post-game. “The turnovers were a big thing. That’s what killed us and killed some of our drives.”

Michael Ayers, a linebacker for Winnipeg, intercepted one of Ford’s passes, which led to Oliveira’s 30-yard run and subsequent six-yard touchdown that put Winnipeg ahead for good in the fourth quarter.

Despite the offensive efforts from the Elks’ Justin Rankin, who rushed for 157 yards on 14 attempts, the Elks were unable to capitalize effectively. Ford completed 10 out of 17 passes for 131 yards before being replaced by McLeod Bethel-Thompson midway through the fourth quarter.

Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros contributed a touchdown pass to Ontaria Wilson and completed 19 of 27 passes for 191 yards. However, he also threw an interception, showcasing the intense defensive effort of both teams.

The matchup was part of a home-and-home series, with the two teams set to face off again on Friday in Winnipeg at Princess Auto Stadium. The Bombers will be looking to extend their winning streak against the Elks to 11 games.
