Winter Storm Causes Widespread Flight Delays and Cancellations at Denver International Airport
A severe winter storm sweeping through Colorado has resulted in significant disruptions to air travel at Denver International Airport (DIA). As of Saturday, November 9, nearly 500 flights have been canceled, and over 900 have been delayed due to intense snowfall and low visibility.
The disruptions began on Friday, with 495 flights canceled and 924 delayed. By early Saturday morning, an additional 62 flights were canceled, and 29 more were delayed. Major airlines such as Southwest, United, Frontier, and American Airlines are among those affected, leaving many travelers frustrated and stranded.
DIA’s snow removal teams are working tirelessly to clear the runways and maintain airport operations. However, with worsening conditions, airport officials are advising travelers to expect longer wait times at check-in and security. Travelers are urged to arrive early, check their flight status frequently, and be prepared for possible delays.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Winter Weather Watch for Colorado, warning of heavy snow, low visibility, and bitterly cold temperatures throughout the weekend. Officials are recommending that travelers carefully consider their plans and be prepared for detours or delays.
To manage the backlog of flights, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has activated a traffic management program for DIA-bound flights. This program has resulted in average delays of nearly two hours, with more potential delays anticipated as the storm continues. DIA is collaborating closely with the FAA to minimize these disruptions.
