Winter Storm Forces School Closures Across Illinois and Massachusetts

CHICAGO, Ill. — Several schools in the Chicago area have announced closures and early dismissals as a significant winter storm approaches, expected to bring heavy snowfall on Wednesday. This decision affects over two dozen schools across the region, with many transitioning to e-learning protocols.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory is in effect beginning Wednesday morning, predicting substantial snow accumulation throughout the day, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. “We expect the highest snowfall rates potentially exceeding 1 inch per hour at times,” a spokesperson from the NWS stated.
The timing of the storm raises concerns about hazardous travel conditions. The NWS warned of reduced visibility, snow-covered roads, and treacherous travel as snowfall intensifies, creating a challenging commute for residents.
Chicago Public Schools had yet to announce closures as of Tuesday afternoon. However, the district’s guidelines indicate a strong inclination to remain open whenever possible: “Chicago Public Schools’ goal is to always have schools open. We don’t want students to miss valuable learning time and meals they depend on during the school day,” the district explains on its website.
In Massachusetts, similar conditions prompted significant delays and closures. As of Thursday morning, over 150 schools announced delayed openings or cancellations following a night of snowfall mixed with sleet and freezing rain. School districts in Andover, Billerica, Gloucester, Lawrence, Lowell, and Worcester are among those operating on a two-hour delay.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for parts of Massachusetts through Thursday morning. This advisory covers Franklin, Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Hampden, and Berkshire counties, due to expected treacherous driving conditions caused by a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
In addition to the winter storm advisories, forecasters warn that road conditions could be hazardous. A key message from local authorities is for residents to exercise caution while traveling. “With slick roads likely, it’s important to be vigilant, especially for commuters who may be out early,” officials noted.
The winter storm, part of a series of weather systems impacting the region this week, is projected to bring further precipitation through the weekend, potentially complicating conditions just as residents hope for improvement.
